Tags Should Help People Find Things
I want the blog to have tags and filtering because a list of posts gets less useful as it grows.
Tags give me a simple way to describe what a post is about. Filtering gives a visitor a way to look for posts on a topic they’re interested in, instead of having to scan everything in date order.
Keep the categories useful
The hard part isn’t adding a tag field. It’s picking labels that help someone understand the posts and making sure I use them consistently.
I don’t want a complicated taxonomy for a small personal blog. A short list of useful topics is enough to start. I can change it later if I learn that the categories aren’t helping.
Writing and finding belong together
I think about the reading experience when I write a post, but the blog also needs to make older writing discoverable. Tags and filters are a small feature, yet they make the site feel more like a place to read than a folder of articles.
I’m still building out the design around it, but the basic idea is in place.
